Theo Tổng công ty quản lý bay Việt Nam (VATM), sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất rất thuận tiện cho hàng không dân dụng vì nằm trên các tuyến đường hàng không Đông-Tây và Nam-Bắc sầm uất, là cửa ngõ giao thương của Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh với thế giới, là điểm dừng chân thuận tiện và lý tưởng trên mạng lưới hàng không phục vụ Châu Âu, Nam Á và Châu Á. Đông Nam, Đông Bắc, Đông Bắc Á và Châu Á – Thái Bình Dương.
Tại sao khu vực sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất bị thu hẹp?
Sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất hiện có hai đường băng cất – hạ cánh song song, theo mô hình được xây dựng năm 1967. Nhưng trong điều hành bay, hai đường băng cất và hạ cánh gần như được coi là bằng 1, vì khoảng cách giữa 2 trục tim không đáp ứng các tiêu chuẩn đường băng cất và hạ cánh phải độc lập hoàn toàn của Tổ chức hàng không dân dụng quốc tế (ICAO).

Theo VATM, để giải quyết vấn đề tắc nghẽn trên không và mặt đất tại Tân Sơn Nhất, ngoài các giải pháp quản lý không lưu, “phân luồng” máy bay đã được triển khai, cần phải tìm kiếm và áp dụng thực hiện các giải pháp nâng cao năng lực của sân bay này. Chẳng hạn như: xây dựng thêm các đường lăn song song mới với các đường lăn “độc nhất” hiện có; Đầu tư xây dựng nhà ga hành khách T3; Đầu tư xây dựng sân bay quốc tế Long Thành …
Năm 2018, số lượng hành khách đi qua sân bay quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất đạt 38,5 triệu hành khách, gấp 1,5 lần và vượt xa công suất dự kiến 25 triệu hành khách / năm. Tổng số chuyến bay cất cánh và hạ cánh tại sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất vượt quá trung bình hơn 700 chuyến bay / ngày. Công suất chạy trên đường băng hiện được điều phối ở 44 chuyến bay mỗi giờ, trung bình cứ 1 phút 20 giây lại có 2 máy bay cất cánh hoặc hạ cánh.
